Our Organic Hens | | Our organic hens are a brown hybrid-breed that lays lots of lovely brown eggs. They’re very social creatures and have the run of our spacious cage-free barns where they congregate in contented cackling groups. We raise our hens from day-old chicks in cage-free pullet barns. When they reach egg-laying age at about 17 weeks old, we move them to cage-free laying barns where they can continue to roam about freely. A typical day starts with laying an egg in their nest and then meeting at the feeder for some wholesome natural grain or scratching around in small groups. In good weather, they scratch outside in our winter gardens. During the summer months, they pasture outside on the grass. At night, they roost together on roomy perches back in the barn.
Cage-free barns
Our hens are all housed in cage-free barns with ample roosting and scratch space available. When conditions are suitable, they have access to the outdoors. They lay their eggs in nests resembling small houses with red curtains to give them privacy for laying. Clean, well-ventilated barns are essential to maintaining our hens' health and productivity. We continually monitor our barns for cleanliness, ventilation, temperature, lighting and waste removal. We make sure our hens have plenty of food and water and space for nesting, scratching and roosting.
