Our Free Range Hens

We think our organic, free range hens are beautiful. Maybe we’re a little biased because we love them so much. Our hens are a special breed similar to a Rhode Island Red, known for laying great eggs, but also for being very social creatures. So we make sure that our spacious free range barns give them plenty of room to “meet and greet” each other in contented cackling groups. And we follow some of the nation’s most stringent, certifiable standards to ensure they have a safe, clean, and comfortable place to live.

We raise our hens from day-old chicks in cage-free pullet barns. When they reach the egg-laying age at about 17 weeks old, we move them to free range laying barns, where there’s access to green pasture, lots of room to strut, roost, and socialize—along with quieter private space to lay their eggs in cozy, red-curtained laying houses.

A Day in the Life of Free Range Hens

A typical free range hen’s day starts with laying an egg in her nest. Later, she’ll meet her pals at the feeder for some tasty organic grain and fresh water, or scratch around in small groups.

She’ll pop outside for some fresh air if she wants to—in summer, she can hunt and peck in fields of organically-raised grass and wildflowers around her barn; in winter, she’ll strut, socialize and roam where she pleases to dust-bathe inside the barn.  From outside, she can come back inside her barn anytime she wants, to socialize, eat, or just chill out.

At night, she’ll roost with her buddies, on roomy perches or in her own favorite place. And chances are tomorrow morning, she’ll contentedly strut to her nest again and lay another beautiful egg!

Pete and Gerry’s Organic Eggs not affected by egg recall!

Over 200 million eggs have been recalled recently by another company due to a concern over Salmonella stemming from a single Rose Acre Farms location in North Carolina.

None of our eggs are part of this recall as we would never produce eggs on a factory farm of that size or style. If you’re concerned about eggs you purchased recently, see what brands have been recalled.

Pete and Gerry’s Organic Eggs are produced responsibly and safely on small family farms. Learn more about why our eggs are different.
