Organic Egg Industry Pits Factory Farms Against Family Farms

Zester Daily discusses how family farms are now becoming the spotlight over factory farms in the egg industry. Factory-like conditions are not ideal for chickens and don’t follow humane practices. Pete and Gerry’s was featured in this article since they follow free range farming practices.

Most days — when temperatures are not extreme and there are no predators or disease-carrying migratory birds about — the flock moves at will in and out of the barns, dust-bathing and foraging in organic pasture.”

Consumer trends in the egg industry are streaming towards animal welfare practices. Next steps involve educating consumers about all of the different egg labels that could potentially fool them.

Over 200 million eggs have been recalled recently by another company due to a concern over Salmonella stemming from a single Rose Acre Farms location in North Carolina.
