Unaffected by Massive Egg Recall

By now you have no doubt heard about the massive Salmonella egg recall that was announced on April 13th by Rose Acre Farms and the FDA. While this recall is in no way connected to Pete and Gerry’s Organic Eggs, we are astonished by its impact and size – 207 million eggs packaged across about 9 different brands and distributed in 9 states. 207 million eggs is enough to let well over half of the U.S. population eat an egg for breakfast.

And here’s the incredible part: that number of eggs came from a single farm in North Carolina, over just 93 days of production. That means they are producing over 2 million eggs per day from over 2 million hens in one location – all in cages. Most Americans don’t know that about 9 out of 10 eggs are produced in facilities exactly like this.

At Pete and Gerry’s Organic Eggs we simply don’t believe in factory farming. We partner with small, independent farms that can manage their egg operation with just their family. That typically means they will just have one, sometimes two, Certified Humane, free range barns with readily used outdoor pasture. This is better for farmers, farm communities, and hens. It is also better for the people who buy our eggs; they can trust the actual farmers who care for the hens that produce those eggs.

While it is not possible to fully prevent disease we feel very strongly that how you farm goes a long way toward reducing the risk. It’s just another reason we hold a small farm philosophy, and partner with over 120 small family farms.

I love Pete and Harry’s organic eggs! Though they cost a bit more than other brands they are well worth the cost. More nutritious eggs from happy hens, you can tell the difference.

    1. Taylor says:

We’re so glad that you’ve noticed a difference, Lynda! While our eggs are not always the cheapest on the shelf, we do want to point out that the cost reflects the responsible practices behind the label, including fair pay for our small family farmers, high quality organic feed, grassy green pasture for our hens to roam in, and so much more. Unfortunately, the cheapest options on the shelf often represent corners that have been cut: mega-factories, scaled up as much as possible, build an assembly line of sorts and eliminate any detail that could have a small cost associated with it. Our higher price can be attributed to the fact that we put our hens and farmers first, valuing their livelihood over profit. So while our carton may cost a bit more than the one next to to it, we can’t thank you enough for choosing to believe in what you buy.

I am happy to purchase an amazing quality product from a family oriented business that cherishes the process of production from hens on the farm to eggs in our homes. Thank you for caring, sacrificing, and your dedication ensuring good quality versus quantity.

    1. Taylor says:

We want to thank you for supporting our values and practices, Mallory. We truly believe that our hens are happier, healthier, and better taken care of in a Certified Humane Free Range environment – it’s why we choose to partner with small family farms that work incredibly hard every single day to make sure we’re providing consumers with a product that they can trust. We can’t tell you how much your support means to our entire family here at Pete and Gerry’s!

  7. Stephanie says:

I switched to eggs from pasture raised hens several months ago after previously switching to cage-free eggs and then saw pictures that horrified me of cage-free production, so I made the second switch.

    1. Taylor says:

Egg carton labels can definitely get a bit confusing, Stephanie. We’re so glad that you decided to switch to Certified Humane Free Range! You might be interested in this video that explains some of the differences. Thank you for your support!

  10. Margeret DePaula says:

I only buy Pete&Jerry’s eggs! (although I did check serial numbers on the eggs in my fridge when that was announced on FB Just in case better to be safe than sorry) I like the posts they have here on FB and I believe that their eggs are really from free range farms. I grew up with our family raising our own chickens and always had free range chickens and eggs. Just used three of them tonight in making a sugar free cake for my husband. Sugar free and free range eggs!! What could be healthier!!

    1. Taylor says:

That sounds delicious, Margeret! Thank you so much for choosing to cook and bake with our eggs. If you haven’t already, we invite you to check out our recipes. We hope your cake turned out fabulous!

  15. Katherine says:

Whenever I can’t buy from my local egg farmer I always yours in my grocery store. I believe happy animals produce the best and you seem to believe in this philosophy as well! I love that you use free range chickens. I wish more people understood the terrible living conditions that chickens live in that produce their eggs they buy.

  16. Sea says:

Thank you. I’m happy to support your farm because of your practices. It makes me feel much better, and much safer, and even happier for the chickens

Pete and Gerry’s Organic Eggs not affected by egg recall!

Over 200 million eggs have been recalled recently by another company due to a concern over Salmonella stemming from a single Rose Acre Farms location in North Carolina.

None of our eggs are part of this recall as we would never produce eggs on a factory farm of that size or style. If you’re concerned about eggs you purchased recently, see what brands have been recalled.

Pete and Gerry’s Organic Eggs are produced responsibly and safely on small family farms. Learn more about why our eggs are different.
