This caramel apple cake is ready to grace your autumn dessert table, but sure to fill your home with a welcome and familiar scent any time of year. The recipe calls for cake mix so that you can focus your efforts on the real star of the cake: the layer of sweet and sticky caramel that coats each tender apple slice. Enjoy this cake warm for the ultimate ooey gooey experience!

To make the cake

  1. Preheat oven to 350F.

  2. In a saucepan, combine butter and brown sugar. Heat on medium low until melted.

  3. Remove pan from heat and add in 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon, vanilla extract, and salt, stirring to combine.

  4. Pour melted butter and brown sugar mixture into a 9" x 13" baking dish, then layer apple slices on top.

  5. Prepare cake batter by combining cake mix, the remaining teaspoon of cinnamon, nutmeg, eggs, vegetable oil, and milk, or use your favorite standard cake recipe to create a batter from scratch with the additional cinnamon and nutmeg.

  6. Pour cake batter into pan over the apples. Transfer to oven and bake for about 40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

  7. Let cool for 15 minutes and then flip pan over to release. Enjoy warm!
