Not all "Cage-Free" claims are created equal

Every label tells a different story about how hens are raised, and those differences show up in the quality of the eggs. From overcrowded barns to open pastures, each lifestyle shapes how hens eat, move, and live – and influences the quality, taste, and nutrition of their eggs.

Caged

Hens in caged systems, often called “conventional” eggs, spend their entire lives confined indoors in small wire cages with little room to move or spread their wings. Each bird has only a limited amount of space, often less than the size of a sheet of paper.

Because they can't roam or express natural behaviors like nesting, dust-bathing, of foraging, their environment is highly stressful and unnatural. While caged systems make egg collection efficient for large producers, they offer the lowest level of hen welfare.

If your egg carton doesn't specify Cage-Free, Free-Range, or Pasture-Raised, the eggs inside likely came from hens in cages.

Cage-free

“Cage-free” sounds positive, but these hens don't have access to the outdoors. They spend their entire lives inside large barns where they can move around more but rarely, if ever, experience fresh air, sunlight, or open spaces.

While this setup eliminates cramped cages, it still limits natural behaviors like foraging, dust-bathing, and exploring. “Cage-free” is a step up from caged confinement, but it's far from a natural lifestyle. We see this as an industry baseline, not a benchmark for humane living conditions.

Free-range

Free-range hens have access to the outdoors: real grass, fresh air, and sunshine. Each hen gets at least two square feet of outdoor space to roam and forage, while still having safe shelter inside the barn when they choose. The result is a healthier, more active flock that produces strong-shelled eggs with rich, flavorful yolks.

Free-range goes well beyond “cage-free”, offering hens the freedom to live more naturally and stay connected to their environment. This balanced indoor-outdoor lifestyle supports their wellbeing year-round and leads to consistently high-quality eggs you can feel good about choosing.

Pasture-raised

Pasture-raised hens enjoy expansive outdoor access, with at least 108 square feet per bird, where they can roam, forage, and explore as nature intended. They spend their days on open grass pastures, scratching in the soil, taking dust baths, and eating a natural diet of seeds and insects, supplemented with high-quality feed.

This lifestyle allows hens to live naturally: active, curious, and free. This environment helps them produce exceptional eggs with firm whites, deep golden yolks, and robust flavor. Pasture-raised represents the highest standard of humane, sustainable egg farming.
